Parking and Walk-On Access

• Walk-on parking: how many spaces, paved vs. gravel, distance from NC-12.
• Restrooms: vault toilet on site? Nearest flush toilets?
• Cell signal: which carriers reach reliably?
• Trash / fish-cleaning: available or pack-it-out?
• Walk-on access: how long is the walk to the water? Sand depth?]

Current Closure Status

Closure status changes weekly during nesting season (typically March through August) and after major storms. Always check the live NPS status before you drive — a closed ramp ends a trip fast:

Using OBX ORV ramps — what every angler should know

Before you drive on

Permit: A current Cape Hatteras National Seashore ORV permit ($50 for 7 days, $120 annual) is required for all NPS ramps. Buy at the NPS visitor centers in Coquina Beach or Bodie Island, or online at recreation.gov.
Safety gear: NPS regulation requires a low-pressure tire gauge, shovel, jack and board, tow strap, and spare tire — they will check.
Air down: 18–20 PSI in soft sand, 25 PSI on firmer beaches. Lower pressure = bigger footprint = less digging. Air up at the NPS air stations at each ramp before driving back on pavement.

Driving on the sand

4WD/AWD required. 2WD will get stuck before you reach the beach.
Stay in existing tracks when possible — they’re packed firmer than virgin sand.
Momentum matters more than speed. Steady throttle in soft patches; don’t gun it and don’t slow to a crawl.
If you start to dig, stop immediately. Get out, lower pressure another 2–3 PSI, dig sand from behind the tires, and try again gently.

Closures and seasonal access

Piping plover and sea turtle nesting closures run roughly March 15 through August 31, with specific ramps closing as nests are identified.
The NPS access map is updated daily and is the only reliable source for current closures.
Cape Point (Ramp 44) is the most common closure target — always check that morning.

Etiquette

Park parallel to the ocean, not at an angle. Other anglers need to drive past.
Give other rigs at least 30 yards of space if there’s room.
Don’t park between someone and the water — you’re blocking their cast.
Pack out everything. Lines, bait bags, snack wrappers, all of it.
