Yes, you can rent surf fishing rods on the Outer Banks instead of hauling your own. Three outfits north of Oregon Inlet rent rod-and-reel setups: one delivers to your rental house, one hands them over rigged in Nags Head, and one covers Corolla. Jennette’s Pier rents a rod by the day if you only want to try it for an afternoon. None of the rental shops publish prices, so plan on a call or an email.

OBX Rod Rentals — delivered to your door
If you are flying in, or you simply do not want to strap rods to the roof, this is the easy one. OBX Rod Rentals rents fishing rods by the week and delivers them to your rental house, then collects them at the end of the stay. They also carry basic tackle to get you started.
Their delivery run covers Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head, and they say they will go to southern beach locations for larger orders. Book at least three days ahead; after that, email and ask what is left.

Tide Chaser’s Bait & Tackle — Nags Head pickup
Tide Chaser’s rents rod and reel setups daily, by the weekend, or by the week out of the shop at 3917 S. Croatan Highway in Nags Head. This is the option we would point a first-timer at, because of what comes with it.
Pick-ups leave the shop with basic rigging already on, a sand spike, a bucket for your gear, and instructions on where and when to fish. If you want more than that, they will walk you through technique at no extra charge — which is worth more on your first trip than any upgrade you could rent.

OBX Bait & Tackle in Corolla — rentals through Shaka Fish Co.
If you are staying at the north end, OBX Bait & Tackle in Corolla handles rod rentals through Shaka Fish Co. The shop’s rental page simply says to call or text Brendan at (703) 987-6338 to set it up, so ask about length of rental and what is included when you reach him. The shop itself is at (252) 453-3339.

Jennette’s Pier — rent a rod for the day
Not sure you even like this yet? Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head rents an adult or junior rod for $12 a day, already rigged with a bottom rig, so you can walk on with nothing and start fishing. They sell bait at the counter too: frozen squid by the box, frozen finger mullet and live lugworms by the dozen, and frozen shrimp by the half-pound tub.

What about Hatteras Island?
This is the gap. Every rental operation we could verify stops at Nags Head — and Hatteras is where most of the drive-on surf fishing happens. Tackle shops down the island will sell you anything you need and rig it for you, but we could not confirm a single one that rents rod-and-reel setups.

What renting does not cover
- A license. On the beach, anyone 16 or older needs a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License. Renting the rod does not change that. See our Outer Banks fishing license guide. Several piers hold a blanket license that covers you while you are on the pier — ask before you pay for your own.
- Bait. The rental shops sell it; none of them include it. Our bait guide covers what to buy for what you are after.

Rent or buy?
Renting wins for a first trip, a short trip, or a family that wants two rods in the sand for one afternoon. Buying wins the moment you know you are coming back — a starter surf setup costs about what a week of rentals does, and it is yours.

We could not confirm a rod rental shop south of Nags Head. Hatteras tackle shops sell gear and rig it for you, but if you are staying down the island, plan to bring rods or pick up a rental up the beach before you head south.
Do rental rods come with bait?
No. Bait is sold separately everywhere we checked. Tide Chaser’s does send you out with basic rigging, a sand spike and a bucket, and Jennette’s rental rods come rigged with a bottom rig.
