Kitty Hawk and Kill Devil Hills share one long beach, one working pier and the same water off Duck Pier, which is the NOAA station this page reads. There is no single daily report for these two towns; the sources are Avalon Pier’s Facebook page and cam in Kill Devil Hills, TW’s Bait & Tackle’s report, and the Nags Head pier report a few miles south, which fishes the same water on the same tide.

Avalon Pier on Facebook and the Avalon cam are the Kill Devil Hills sources. TW’s Bait & Tackle posts the report the beach anglers read. Jennette’s Pier, the nearest written report we track, is shown below when there is a recent one. Kitty Hawk Pier belongs to the Hilton Garden Inn and runs mainly as an event venue; public fishing access there is limited and changes, so call the hotel before you count on it, and it does not post a report.

What’s typical here by season

Spring (April–May)

The northern beaches warm last, so spring runs a couple of weeks behind Hatteras: bluefish and sea mullet from mid-April, Spanish off Avalon in May. Watch the Duck reading; 60° is the line.

Summer (June–August)

Pompano, sea mullet and spot on sand fleas and bloodworms in the sloughs, Spanish and blues on metal at first light, sharks after dark. The Kitty Hawk beaches are steep and the wash is close; you do not need to cast far.

Fall (September–November)

Spot and bluefish in September and October, big red drum passing in October and November, and speckled trout in the sloughs on the warm days between fronts. Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk both open their beaches to 4x4s on October 1.

Winter (December–March)

Striped bass country in a cold winter; the northern beaches are as close to the stripers’ ocean staging water as the Outer Banks gets. Sea mullet and dogfish otherwise.
