What’s typical here by season
Spring (April–May)
The last stretch of the Outer Banks to warm up. Bluefish and sea mullet from late April, puppy drum in the sloughs in May, and the first Spanish on clean-water days. The 4x4 beaches are empty in spring and the fishing is the reason to go.
Summer (June–August)
Pompano, sea mullet, spot and croaker on sand fleas and bloodworms; Spanish and blues on metal at first light. Currituck County’s beach parking permit season runs from the second Saturday in May through the last Saturday in September, and the beach north of Corolla fills with rental trucks by mid-morning; fish early.
Fall (September–November)
Spot in September and October, bluefish in waves, and the big red drum running past the northern beaches in October and November. Once the parking permit season ends on the last Saturday in September, the crowds are gone and the drum are the best of the year up here.
Winter (December–March)
Striped bass water. In a cold winter the Corolla and Carova beaches see stripers in the wash, and they are the only reason most people fish it in January.

Do I need a permit to fish the 4x4 beaches north of Corolla?
Driving the 4x4 beaches takes no permit, but from the second Saturday in May through the last Saturday in September Currituck County requires a beach parking permit to park on the sand ($50 a week, 300 sold each week). The rest of the year no permit is needed. You need a North Carolina Coastal Recreational Fishing License year-round.
Where does the water temperature on this page come from?
Duck Pier, NOAA station 8651370, about 14 miles south of Corolla. It is the only NOAA water-temperature gauge on the northern Outer Banks.
