Black Drum on the Outer Banks: Surf Fishing Guide
Black drum are a hard-fighting surf fish on the Outer Banks, caught on shrimp, clam, and crab fished on the bottom, with the best runs in spring and fall. They range from small “puppy” black drum in the suds to big bull black drum over 40 pounds around the inlets. Unlike red drum, they have a deep, high-backed body, chin barbels, and no spot on the tail.
If you hook something that bulldogs straight down and stays deep, you may have a black drum. Here is how to catch them on the OBX.
Black drum vs red drum: what is the difference?
- Black drum — deep gray/black body, chin barbels (whiskers), no tail spot, crushes shellfish.
- Red drum — coppery-red, one or more black spots near the tail, no barbels.
